On January 30, fire totally destroys the 750-seat Royal Lyceum Theatre in Toronto, built in 1848.
The four-storey 2,196-seat Grand Opera House opens in Toronto on September 21 under the patronage of Lord Dufferin and the management of Charlotte Morrison with a production of Sheridan's School for Scandal. Morrison appears in her favourite role of Lady Teazle. But despite the initial support of prominent Torontonians, the Grand becomes unprofitable and in 1876 is sold to a new owner who replaces Mrs. Morrison as manager in 1878.
