The 2,196-seat Grand Opera House in Toronto burns down but is rebuilt within fifty-one working days and its proscenium arch increased from 30 to 50 feet. The theatre reopens on February 9, 1880 with a production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet starring Adelaide Neilson.
The Grand Opera House, Kingston's first legitimate theatre also known as William Martin's Opera House, opens on January 6 to capitalize on the lucrative touring business. The theatre is destroyed by fire on December 6, 1898.
