Henry Irving's Canadian tour as an ad for cigars

Henry Irving tours to Canada in February and September-October with Ellen Terry during his highly profitable North American tours and returns in 1894, 1895, 1900 and 1904. Audiences in the larger cities such as Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston and Toronto flock to see them act in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet, Leopold Lewis's The Bells, Dion Boucicault's Louis XI and Conan Doyle's Waterloo.

John Carleton stars as the hero Marmaduke Hilton in his three-act Irish melodrama advocating social and political reform, More Sinned Against Than Sinning, at the play's premiere by the Father Mathew Association Dramatic Club in St. Malachi's Hall, St. John's, New Brunswick, on March 17 and 19. Carleton's drama had been published by De Witt in New York and by Dramatic Publishing in Chicago in 1883.
