Herman Voaden's realistic one-act drama Wilderness: A Play of the North, written for George Pierce Baker, the eminent Yale professor of playwriting, is premiered at Yale University on May 2, directed by George Sklar. While at Yale, Voaden also begins his highly symbolic playwriting with his full-length drama Earth Song. Baker, who had also taught Eugene O'Neill and was the author of Dramatic Technique which advocated the principles of the well-made play, warns Voaden not to pursue his non-realistic, symbolic playwriting style. "Advise to stop all this kind of thing and write of the Canada he knows with a better dramatic handling that he shows in his one-acts. He will go to seed if he continues in this path."
