Herman Voaden directs his last symphonic expressionist drama, Ascend As the Sun, at Hart House Theatre in April. Only a few weeks after the premiere, several members of the cast and crew enlist to fight in World War II. Voaden realizes that his idealistic vision of Canada and of the role of the arts in shaping better human beings is not applicable during wartime and turns to the political arena as a member and federal candidate for the socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, the forerunner of the New Democratic Party.
