Modern Theatre in Context: A Critical Timeline

Savage God, founded by John Juliani in Vancouver provides the only alternative theatre in the city. Its name – derived from Yeats' response to seeing the first performance of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi – lays claim to the avant-garde tradition of stylistic and political radicalism. Much of their work was designed to challenge norms of behaviour and perceptions of reality, for instance through presenting Strindberg's two-woman piece, The Stronger, unannounced in a public café. After Juliani staged the actual birth of his son as a "performance", the company for all intents and purposes ceased to exist in 1972. However Juliani revived the name in various contexts since then; and the status of the company as a vital (and provocative) force in Canada's cultural life is indicated by the Mayor of Vancouver's official proclamation of 24 March 2004 as "SAVAGE GOD DAY" following Juliani's death.
