Hirumi GotoBorn in Chiba-Ken, Japan in 1966, Hiromo Goto moved with her family to British Columbia in 1969 where they stayed for eight years before settling in the quaint Alberta town of Nanton. Studying English Literature at the University of Calgary, Goto participated in the Creative Writing program offered at the university. The themes in her writing - adult and young adult fiction as well as children’s literature - are influenced by her childhood and the experience of moving from Japan to Canada, being perceived as foreign and struggling against racism. Goto’s writing takes a clear anti-racist stance as she negotiates the struggle of combining cultures and generations. She often incorporates Japanese folk-tales and magic realism in her work, drawing upon stories her grandmother and father used to tell her. With the publication of The Kappa Child, Goto’s work shifts more to the realm of science fiction and fantasy while retaining its literary merit. In addition to publishing novels, Goto’s poetry and short stories have appeared in a variety of anthologies, and she has also published critical essays dealing with issues of ethnicity and culture-crossing. The mother of two children, Goto currently resides in Burnaby, B.C, where, in addition to writing fiction, she works as a writing instructor and editor.
