Heather O'NeilBorn in Montreal in the 1970's, Heather O’Neill moved to Virginia to live with her mother when her parents separated. However, when O’Neill was nine years old, her mother sent the children back to Montreal to live with their father. O’Neill earned a B.A. from McGill University in 1994 before becoming a poet and a novelist. Her debut novel, Lullabies for Little Criminals, has gained her much attention as a new up and coming Canadian novelist. The story line of the book has parallels to O’Neill’s own childhood, although the book is not autobiographical; O’Neill simply draws on her own childhood setting. Her novel deals with the juxtaposition of the childhood world of innocence and the cruelty of the urban world. Similarly, her collection of poems deals with the journey into the urban landscape as it examines topics such as alcoholism, sexuality, drug addictions and defenselessness. In addition to her poetry and novel, O’Neill appears regularly on the National Public Radio Show This American Life. She also writes short stories, one of which was adapted into a feature film Saint Jude, in 2000. O’Neill currently resides in Montreal on St. Urbain, with her boyfriend and this American Life producer, Jonathan Goldstein, and her daughter, Arizona O’Neill. Heather O’Neill is working on her next novel, preferring to work in that genre instead of poetry. Bibliography Awards Submitted by prathna on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 18:00. Works in the Archive |
