Joseph Boyden

joseph_boyden.jpg

Part Native Canadian and part Irish, Joseph Boyden was born to a large family in 1966. He grew up the third youngest of eleven children in Willowdale, Ontario. Before his father’s death when Boyden was eight, he grew up hearing his father’s war stories and his uncle’s relation of Ojibwe life and myths; both of which would later influence his writing. He began traveling to the United States at the age of 16, although he frequently returned to Ontario. To fund his travels, Boyden worked numerous off jobs, including that of a gravedigger and groundskeeper at a cemetery. Boyden went on to study creative writing at York University and at the University of New Orleans. He taught communications and general arts and sciences at Northern College in Moosonee, Ontario to native students.

Inspired by legend and dedicated to writing Native Canadians into the sagas of the World Wars and Canadian narratives, Boyden often draws on his own family history and narratives when writing his works of fiction. His works largely focus on the thematic of Native cultural survival and is sensitive to the hardships faced, both historically and currently by Native Canadians.

Boyden is married to American author Amanda Boyden and splits his time between teaching Canadian Literature and Creative Writing at the University of New Orleans, and visiting his family and son in Toronto.
