Larissa Lai

larissalai-big.jpg

Larissa Lai was born in California in 1967. Her father was a scholar, and her mother was an intellectual and a writer. Growing up in St. John’s, Newfoundland, she gradually made her way west through her early adult years. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.A. in honors sociology in 1990. She obtained an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England in 2001, and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Calgary in 2006. She has worked as Writer-in-Residence for both the University of Calgary (1997-98) and Simon Fraser University (2006). In addition to working as a poet, novelist, and cultural critic and activist, she is an Assistant Professor in Canadian Literature for the Department of English at the University of British Columbia. She currently resides in Vancouver.

She has written numerous poems and short stories which have appeared in a wide array of literary journals. She has also published critical articles and given numerous conference papers. In her fictional writing, Lai often takes old Asian myths and folktales and reapplies them in contemporary terms for a Canadian audience. Having done community work before she began writing, her writing is very conscious of the emergence of Canadian Literature as distinct from American or British literature, and the various communities within Canada.

Her writing style is poetic and her tales are often framed with magical realism. Her writing reflects her concerns with oppression, and bridges gaps between times and cultures in order to demonstrate the resonance between the separate places. Her work is often hard to categorize, falling into both Asian Diasporic studies and science fiction/fantasy, and it has garnered academic attention for its cultural awareness.
